Hello there, just letting you know that I'm about to move to a new studio. It's been a wonderful 5 years at Little Majestic in Marrickville. Big thanks to Camilla Lawson who created the space and ran it over this time. We have enjoyed many fantastic events there and the space really allowed me to flourish in my practice.
I was also able to run lino classes there which I am not able to keep doing. My new space is also lovely, but smaller. I may run classes elsewhere in the future, so stay tuned ! As I have had to bring some of my art home I may have a few small sale days from my Newtown "Shed" at the rear of our cute workers cottage, just off Alice Street. In other news, I am delighted to be showing a range of my works , with several other artists at Saywell Gallery in September. I love the theme - as I consider all my work "retro" in a way. Thank you to curatotr Elaine Kim and Director Dermot Kearney. The opening night is Thursday the 5th of September. I am also showing 4 large linoprints with @artlovers in Collingwood, Melbourne from the 13th of September to the 25th of October. You can book for opening night tickets with this link - https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/echoes-of-the-earth-exhibition-opening-tickets Lastly, my most recent lino print, "Kissing the Earth" has been shortlisted for the Michael Beazer Works on Paper Aquisitive Prize which is showing from September at East Gippsland Gallery in Victoria. See an image below, Hi all, the sad news is that all artists are vacating Little Majestic by the 2nd of September. The lease has come to an end after a fantastic 5 years. Thanks goes to Camilla Lawson who has worked tirelessly to make LM a thriving hub for creatives.

The unsold pieces will still be available online and from my Marrickville studio from later this week. About the work Welcome to my show, I’m a Sydney-based artist and art educator, specialising in lino printing and mixed media. As the title suggests, many of these pieces are inspired by the interior/still life genre. While I may begin with my head in the real world, once I'm absorbed and in the flow my work goes elsewhere. Each piece can be viewed as a snippet of an alternative reality, embued with striking colours and bold patterns. I have really loved recontextualising my lino print discards and working with stamping and pastel to make these pieces. Making these works is a little like a puzzle, I move parts around until I hit the sweet spot, where the work sings ! This is the work I have had to make in a year of great personal and global trauma. My way of seeing, being and making is my core strength and I see creativity as both magical and transformative. I love sharing my creations and hearing your stories too. I will be back at The Corner Gallery, Stanmore for 4 days only from the 18th - 21st of April. I will be showcasing my mixed media works on paper, which combine my passion for experimental printmaking, collage and drawing. These pieces are rooted in the still life/interior genre, if you look carefully you can see I have included parts of previous prints in most of the works. I have many to choose from. The title "Interior Motives" expresses how I make my work as much for my own psychological well being as for my audience. In these pieces, I attempt to create ordered, but odd spaces with loud patterns, intense colours and textures, awkward objects on imperfect tables and views through slightly wonky windows. https://www.eventbrite.com.au/o/maggie-stein-17101443962
My next session is a 3.5 hour class suitable for beginners. I only take four participants so you get lots of attention ! I'm excited to be pulling work together for my next show.
I will be back at The Corner Gallery, Stanmore from the 18th - 23nd of April. I will be showcasing my collages, which combine my passion for printmaking play and drawing. Most of these collages are rooted in the still life/interior genre, if you look carefully you can see I have included parts of previous prints on a surface or in a window view. My working title for this body of work is "Home Theatre." Some pieces reflect my home space and some are fantastic flights of my imagination, snippets of memory and dreamlike visions. You are most welcome to visit my studio on Saturday 11th of November.
Little Majestic is situated at 43 - 45 Sydney Street, Marrickville. I have a large collection of framed and unframed original prints, discounted artist proofs, cards, assemblages and screen printed tea towels. I know many of you are possibly struggling more than ever financially so I have decided to reinstate my free postage code FSHMS23.
Many thanks for your continued support ! |
