About the work
Maggie Stein is a Sydney-based artist and art educator, specialising in lino printing and mixed media.
“Inside Out” is her third recent solo showing of her combination of mixed media and lino print pieces. The title of the show - suggests the way Maggie interprets her world.
The window is a common motif in Maggie’s work, creating a sense of depth or a portal to another world.
“The window opening as an architectural element in the paintings of artists serves not only as the background or accent of the composition, but also as a metaphor for hope, change, and step into the unknown”.*
Inside out also alludes to the way life tugs us in all sorts of directions, an art practice can be grounding but also acts to help the practitoner remain agile and playful in a turbulent world.
The mixed media pieces are made by recontextualising lino print discards and working with stamping and pastels. These playful beginnings have taken Maggie’s work in a different direction.
Maggie’s large scale linoprints are created over an extended period in the studio.
“Rear Window” portrays the view from the back of May street Studios, St Peters, where she has resided since late 2024.
The view is expansive and allows for a great intake of breath during long studio days.
The well established, often billowing trees are a reminder that nature is with us and we are tiny in this universe.
Carving the lino can feel like a meditation and Maggie often becomes absorbed in the “flow” of repetitive mark making.
Maggie feels her way of seeing, being and making is her core strength and that creativity is magical and transformative.
